Nigerian Students Cheer Gov Who Doubled Campus Power Supply

Students at Abia State University erupted in celebration when their governor arrived to flip the switch on a power station that will end years of blackouts.

Governor Alex Otti upgraded the campus substation from 2.5 MVA to 5 MVA on March 27, doubling the electricity supply for the university and surrounding communities. Video footage shows excited students breaking through security barriers just to shake his hand while others walked beside him shouting with joy.

The power upgrade wasn't his only gift that day. Otti also opened three newly renovated student hostels and started construction on massive new housing that will add 10,000 beds total, split between male and female students.

But the announcement that really got students talking came during the graduation ceremony. Every first-class graduate will now receive an automatic job as a teaching assistant after completing their national service year.

Those top performers also get full scholarships through PhD programs at any public university in Nigeria. And 100 graduates with business ideas in agriculture, technology, or clean energy will share a 200 million naira grant to launch their companies.

The governor gave a special cash prize to Oluchi Etumsi, the university's best graduating student. The combined events were part of the school's 30th through 34th convocation ceremonies held together.

The Ripple Effect

Otti's work extends far beyond campus boundaries. Nigerians across the southeastern state and beyond have praised his infrastructure rebuilding, including roads and hospitals that had fallen into disrepair.

The late evangelist Uma Ukpai said in February 2025 that the governor was "doing signs and wonders" in Abia. That's high praise in a region where reliable electricity has been a dream for decades.

The new power station means students can study after dark, research labs can run experiments without interruption, and nearby homes get stable electricity too. When one community gets reliable power, businesses open, students succeed, and hope spreads.

The jobs program solves another critical problem: brain drain. Top graduates often leave Nigeria seeking opportunities elsewhere, but guaranteed employment and advanced education funding gives them reasons to stay and build their home state.

These aren't campaign promises for someday. Students walked into renovated dorms that same week, and the power started flowing immediately.

When leaders show up with working solutions instead of empty words, communities respond with the kind of joy those students showed: pure, uncontainable celebration.
