Nigerian Students Win $11K in Education Innovation Contest

Mountain Crest High School walked away with a game-changing 5 million naira grant (about $11,000 USD) after winning the 2026 PEARLs Quiz Grand Finale in Owerri, Nigeria. Their students also earned scholarships, and their teacher received special recognition for guiding them to victory.

The competition brought together secondary school students from across Imo State to test their knowledge through written assessments and live quiz battles. But this wasn't just about memorizing facts—students also showcased STEAM innovations, presenting real solutions to challenges facing their communities.

NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services partnered with Seplat Energy to create the program after identifying critical educational needs in their operational areas. The goal was simple: give young people the tools to think critically, solve problems, and compete confidently in a changing world.

Mrs. Chioma Afe from Seplat Energy explained that the competition nurtures more than just academic skills. It builds discipline, creativity, and the ability to apply classroom knowledge to actual challenges students will face in their futures.

Owerri City Secondary School claimed second place, while Eziachi Secondary School in Orlu took third. Every participating school received recognition because the organizers believe the experience itself—the collaboration, pressure, and growth—matters as much as the prizes.

The Ripple Effect

This competition is creating waves beyond individual student success. Teachers gain professional recognition and resources to improve their instruction. Schools receive project grants that benefit entire student bodies, not just quiz team members.

The Imo State government is taking notice too. Commissioner Emeka Mgbudem praised the initiative for strengthening education, healthcare, and community development across the region. When private companies invest in local students, entire communities rise.

The STEAM innovation segment particularly stood out this year. Students didn't just answer questions—they built prototypes, designed solutions, and presented ideas that could genuinely improve life in their towns. Outstanding teams received additional grants to develop their projects further.

The PEARLs Quiz has expanded significantly since launch, now reaching more schools and students each year. What started as a corporate social responsibility checkbox has evolved into a flagship program that stakeholders across Nigeria's education sector actively celebrate and support.
