Nigerian university students performing political drama on stage during Trinity International Model United Nations launch event

Nigerian University Launches UN Diplomacy Training Program

✨ Faith Restored

Trinity University just launched TiMUN, a Model United Nations program that will train Nigerian students in diplomacy and negotiation while opening doors to international internships. The student-led initiative kicks off with a conference later this year that brings together universities from across Nigeria.

A student at Trinity University had an idea to train future diplomats, and his school just turned it into reality.

The university launched Trinity International Model United Nations (TiMUN) this week, a program designed to teach students diplomacy, negotiation, and global leadership skills. The initiative came from Melody Inyang, former president of the Political Science Students Association, who was inspired by similar programs at other Nigerian universities.

The launch began with a bang. Students performed "Summit of Shadows," a political drama written entirely by a student that portrayed a fictional 1990s military coup in Nigeria and how United Nations intervention restored democracy. The play set the stage for what TiMUN aims to accomplish: preparing young Nigerians to tackle real-world diplomatic challenges.

The first full TiMUN conference later this year will simulate an actual United Nations General Assembly session. Students from multiple universities will debate and negotiate solutions to global issues, just like real UN delegates do in New York and Geneva.

But this isn't just about role-playing. Participants will gain access to internship pathways at the United Nations, African Union, ECOWAS, and diplomatic missions of major world powers. The Director-General of the United States International Affairs Office has already expressed interest in hosting TiMUN delegates during a future UN General Assembly session in New York.

Vice Chancellor Prof Clement Kolawole championed the student's vision and funded the entire program. "Instead of students going into negative tendencies, this is going to be a proper channel for them to utilize their energy," he said. "These students could go on to become diplomats who contribute to the growth and development of our country."

The university plans to partner with embassies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Nigerian ambassadors to make TiMUN an annual event. They're betting it will become a flagship conference attracting students from across Nigeria and beyond.

The Ripple Effect

Samuel Chimela, founder of the BIMUN Development Organisation, attended the launch and celebrated Trinity joining the growing Model United Nations community across Nigerian universities. He sees these conferences as essential training grounds for tomorrow's leaders who will shape international relations.

"One unguarded statement can trigger another global pandemic or another war," Chimela said. "This is why I believe the conference is at the heart of shaping these young leaders."

The program represents something bigger than one university's initiative. It's part of a movement across Nigerian higher education to give students practical skills and real-world connections, not just classroom theory.

When students lead and institutions support, everyone wins.
