Nigerian Weightlifter Rafiat Lawal Wins 2nd Commonwealth Gold

When Rafiat Lawal stepped onto the platform in Glasgow, the crowd erupted with cheers that she says lifted her spirit higher than any barbell could. The Nigerian weightlifter had come to defend her Commonwealth Games title, and she left with gold around her neck and a new Games record to her name.

Lawal's journey to back-to-back Commonwealth championships didn't come easy. She trained first at home, then moved to the National Sports Commission camp, and finally to Aberdeen for final preparations. "It was tough training all through, but I would say it turned out well," she said after her win.

The competition tested her nerves more than once. During the clean and jerk, Lawal faced real pressure and had to adjust her strategy mid-competition, asking officials to reduce her starting weight to secure the gold first. She admitted the challenge scared her at first, but she found her rhythm and pushed through.

Her teammates provided crucial support throughout, cheering "My baby, I trust you" during her lifts. Lawal says that energy makes all the difference in her sport. "I love the way people shout because it lifts my spirit and motivates me even more," she explained.

After each successful lift, Lawal performed a celebration that spectators compared to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo's famous move. She laughed when reporters asked if she was a Ronaldo fan, saying she'd been practicing the celebration herself without realizing someone else already made it famous. "It makes me even happier that people are comparing me with someone great in another sport," she said.

Now Lawal has her sights set on an even bigger stage: the Olympic Games. The challenge is that her current weight category isn't an Olympic event, so she'll need to switch classes. She's still working out the details but remains determined to keep pushing toward her goal.

Lawal's success represents more than individual achievement. Nigerian weightlifters have been consistently performing well since Birmingham 2022, dominating at the African Championships and now in Glasgow. Lawal credits the National Sports Commission for stepping up their support, both financially and through encouragement. "They have encouraged all the athletes this time around, and I give them credit for that," she said.

The combination of institutional support and athlete passion is creating a new era for Nigerian weightlifting. When asked what changed to fuel this recent success, Lawal pointed to both the money and the passion athletes bring to their sport. The federation has also played its part, she noted, doing their best to support the growing program.

Hard work pays when you keep pushing toward your goals, and Rafiat Lawal is living proof.
