Nigerian Weightlifter Smashes 6 Records at Commonwealth Games

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal walked up to the platform in Glasgow on Monday and made history with every lift. The Nigerian weightlifter shattered six records in the women's 58kg event, defending her Commonwealth title with a performance that left competitors 14kg behind.

Lawal lifted 103kg in the snatch, setting new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records in one motion. She then raised 126kg in the clean and jerk for two more records, and her combined 229kg total established records five and six.

The reigning champion finished far ahead of Canada's Ann-Sophie Taschereau, who took silver with 215kg. But Lawal's victory was just one chapter in Nigeria's remarkable day.

Hours earlier, Onome Omolola Didih claimed Nigeria's fifth gold medal in the women's 53kg division, also breaking three records with lifts of 93kg, 113kg, and a 206kg total. Edidiong Umoafia opened Monday's gold rush by winning the men's 71kg title with a record-breaking 319kg.

Nigeria's weightlifting dominance builds on the foundation laid by the country's para powerlifters during the Games' opening days. Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris secured Nigeria's first three gold medals in para powerlifting events.

The country has also collected four silver medals across para powerlifting and weightlifting. Team Nigeria arrived in Glasgow prepared, and the preparation is paying off in spectacular fashion.
