Nigeria's Athletes Train in Scotland for 2026 Games

Nigeria is giving its athletes every advantage heading into the 2026 Commonwealth Games by setting up a month-long training camp right in the host country.

The National Sports Commission confirmed that Team Nigeria will arrive in Aberdeen, Scotland, four weeks before the opening ceremony on July 23. Director-General Bukola Olopade announced the decision, calling it a strategic move to help athletes acclimatize and train under the same conditions they'll face during competition.

The plan addresses challenges that have affected teams in past Games. By basing the entire training camp in Scotland rather than arriving just days before competition, Nigeria eliminates travel stress and gives athletes time to adjust to local weather, time zones, and facilities.

Olopade recently visited Scotland to scout accommodation options and training venues. His goal is simple: remove every possible source of stress so athletes can focus entirely on performing at their peak.

The four-week window allows for technical preparation, team bonding, and physical adjustment to Scottish conditions. Athletes won't need to worry about jet lag, unfamiliar surroundings, or last-minute logistics when competition day arrives.

The approach follows recommendations from Nigeria's Elite Podium Board and aligns with international best practices. Other successful sporting nations have used similar strategies, and Nigeria is embracing what works.
