Nigeria's Cross River to Empower 20,000 Young People

Twenty thousand young people in Cross River State, Nigeria are about to get a real shot at building sustainable careers through a new government program that goes beyond promises.

The Cross River Youth Empowerment Scheme isn't just offering training. It's providing the full package: skills development, startup funds, and connections to buyers who will purchase what participants produce.

Dr. Kalita Aruku, who chairs the program, explained that the initiative targets seven key areas where young people can build real livelihoods. These include agriculture, creative industries, sports, transportation, skill acquisition, small businesses, and education.

The agricultural track shows how comprehensive the program gets. Young people interested in fish farming will receive training, artificial ponds, fingerlings to stock them, feed, and startup cash. Poultry farmers get birds and funds. Cassava and maize farmers receive high-yield seeds and direct connections to flour mills that will buy their harvest.

For those drawn to Nigeria's booming film industry, the creative track offers training in cinematography, directing, producing, scriptwriting, and acting. Aruku notes that Cross River's capital, Calabar, is already a tourism destination. Adding film production infrastructure could make it a cultural powerhouse.

The Ripple Effect

Programs like this address one of Africa's most pressing challenges: youth unemployment. Nigeria has one of the world's youngest populations, with over 60% of citizens under 25. Without economic opportunities, this demographic advantage becomes a crisis.

What makes Cross River's approach promising is the focus on complete support systems. Many empowerment programs teach skills but leave graduates to figure out markets on their own. By securing offtakers (guaranteed buyers) for agricultural products and building infrastructure for creative industries, the state is removing the biggest barriers young entrepreneurs face.

Governor Bassey Otu has made youth empowerment central to his administration's "people first" approach. While Aruku acknowledged funding challenges, he emphasized the governor's commitment to seeing the program through.

If successful, this model could spread across Nigeria's 36 states. Twenty thousand young people gaining real economic footing means twenty thousand families lifted, communities strengthened, and a generation shown that their government believes in their potential.

Cross River is betting big on its young people, and they're giving them the tools to win.
