Nigeria's Gateway Airport Welcomes First Hajj Pilgrims
Ogun State residents will no longer need to travel to Lagos for international flights. Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo is preparing to launch its first international service by airlifting 500 Muslim pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for Hajj.
For years, travelers in Nigeria's Ogun State had to make the long journey to Lagos just to catch an international flight. That inconvenience is about to end as Gateway International Airport prepares to welcome its first international passengers this year.
The modern airport facility in Iperu-Remo is gearing up to launch Hajj operations, allowing Muslim pilgrims from Ogun and neighboring states to travel directly to Saudi Arabia. About 500 pilgrims are expected to depart from the airport for their sacred journey to the Holy Land.
Governor Dapo Abiodun has been working closely with federal agencies to ensure everything runs smoothly. His aviation consultant, Dapo Olumide, has held meetings with the Nigeria Immigration Service, Customs Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and other security institutions to set up the necessary passenger processing systems.
The airport already received certification from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority for domestic commercial flights. Now it joins 17 airports across Nigeria designated for Hajj operations after receiving approval from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.
During a recent security meeting at the airport, Transportation Commissioner Gbenga Dairo confirmed that all the required infrastructure and management capacity is in place. Security agencies assessed the facility and expressed satisfaction with what they found.

A temporary pilgrims' camp will be established at the airport to process travelers before their departure. The Ogun State Muslim Welfare Board is coordinating the arrangements to ensure pilgrims have a comfortable experience.
The Ripple Effect
This development means more than just convenient flights for pilgrims. The airport is expected to transform Ogun State into a major transportation and logistics hub in southwestern Nigeria.
Travelers throughout the region will save hours of commute time to Lagos. Businesses and investors will have easier access to international markets, opening doors for trade and economic growth.
The facility complements existing aviation infrastructure in the region while bringing international connectivity closer to communities that have long needed it. Gateway International Airport is living up to its name by truly opening the world to Ogun State.
With modern facilities capable of handling different aircraft categories, the airport represents a significant step forward for regional connectivity in Nigeria. The world just got a little closer for residents of the Gateway State.
