Nigeria's Oborududu Named Olympic Role Model for Dakar 2026
Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborududu will mentor young athletes at the first Youth Olympics on African soil. The Nigerian wrestling champion joins 30 elite athletes guiding the next generation in Senegal.
Nigeria's Olympic silver medalist Blessing Oborududu is bringing her champion spirit to the next generation as one of 31 elite athletes selected to mentor young competitors at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The International Olympic Committee announced Monday that Oborududu will join Olympic champions from around the world to guide young athletes at the historic event. Scheduled for October 31 to November 13, 2026, the games will mark the first Olympic event ever held on African soil.
Oborududu earned her silver medal in wrestling at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, making her one of Nigeria's most decorated athletes. Now she'll share that experience with teenagers competing in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly across Senegal.
The role models will lead workshops on mental preparation, injury prevention, and career development while mentoring competitors during training sessions. Other notable names include France's Clarisse Agbegnenou in judo, Brazil's skateboarding sensation Rayssa Leal, and Uganda's track star Halimah Nakaayi.
"Young athletes naturally look up to Olympians for guidance and inspiration," said IOC Athletes' Department Director Kaveh Mehrabini. "They represent the very best of Olympism and will help shape the experience of the young athletes competing in Senegal."

Oborududu has already started her transition from champion to coach. She recently led a wrestling club to second place overall at the Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classic in Bayelsa State, competing against 21 other states.
"Being part of their journey is truly an honor," she shared on social media after the tournament. She also officiated beach wrestling events, calling each competition "an experience, a lesson, and an opportunity to grow."
The Ripple Effect
Oborududu's appointment reaches far beyond one athlete's career milestone. As a role model from Nigeria, she'll help inspire young African athletes competing on home soil for the first time at an Olympic event.
The 31 athlete role models represent 25 competition sports and 10 engagement disciplines from across the globe. Their mentorship aligns with the IOC's vision of empowering young athletes and reinforces Dakar 2026's mission as a platform for development across Africa.
For countless young wrestlers and athletes across Nigeria and the continent, seeing Oborududu in this leadership role proves that Olympic dreams born in Africa can reach the world's highest stages.
