Nigeria's Rail Revenue Beats Target by 11% in 2025

Nigeria's rail system just proved it can exceed expectations, bringing in 7.77 billion naira in passenger revenue for 2025 and beating the Federal Government's target by 11 percent.

The achievement comes after years of security struggles and derailment incidents that scared riders away. In early 2025, the government set an ambitious goal of 7.01 billion naira in passenger revenue and backed it up with real investment.

Federal officials put 41.49 billion naira into rail infrastructure and modernization projects. A big chunk of that money went toward security surveillance systems on routes like the Abuja to Kaduna line, where insecurity had previously forced shutdowns.

The investment paid off. Passenger revenue jumped 15.6 percent from 2024's numbers, while cargo revenue climbed 17.4 percent to 2.29 billion naira. Total rail revenue reached 10.67 billion naira for the year.

The numbers weren't perfect all year long. Revenue dipped in the third and fourth quarters as passenger and cargo numbers fluctuated. But the overall trend stayed positive, showing Nigerians are choosing trains again.
