NIO Donates $275K to Disaster Relief in Xizang

When disaster struck Gyirong County on August 26, a massive mudslide didn't just destroy infrastructure. It left hundreds missing and communities desperate for help.

Electric vehicle manufacturer NIO responded swiftly with a 2 million yuan ($275,000) donation to support the disaster-stricken region. Working with the NIO User Charity Foundation and China Charity Federation, the company is directing funds toward immediate rescue operations, temporary housing for displaced residents, and the long rebuilding process ahead.

The mudslide originated on the Nepalese side of the border around 10:30 a.m., spilling across into Gyirong Port and devastating everything in its path. Roads crumbled, communications went dark, and a dangerous landslide lake formed upstream, complicating rescue efforts.

By August 27, authorities confirmed three deaths with 558 people still missing. The government activated its second-highest emergency response level and deployed fire rescue teams and engineering units to the site.

The good news? Rescue efforts are making real progress. Teams have already resettled 499 affected residents and evacuated 555 stranded tourists to safety. Crews are working around the clock to restore damaged roads and communications while monitoring the upstream lake for additional risks.
