NJ Firefighters Save Deer From Icy Canal

When a deer crashed through the ice on the Delaware and Raritan Canal Tuesday afternoon, firefighters from two New Jersey towns turned rescuers into heroes.

Members of the South Bound Brook Fire Department, Bound Brook Fire Department, and South Bound Brook Police responded to the canal behind Town Oaks Apartments around 4:15 p.m. on March 5. They found the terrified animal struggling to stay afloat in the icy water, barely hanging on.

The first rescue attempt using a rope lasso didn't work. The panicked deer was moving too much, making it impossible to secure safely from the shore.

So the firefighters pivoted to plan B. They launched an inflatable raft and carefully navigated through the frigid canal waters to reach the struggling animal.
