A food pantry in North Canton, Ohio just moved to a bigger space and is already helping 40% more families than before.

The North Canton Cares Pantry opened its new location at 5948 Mayfair Road in September 2025, trading up from its former home at Summit Church. The move came just in time as more neighbors started showing up for help with groceries and household essentials.

Executive Director Matt Ile, a former principal in the North Canton school system, saw the need growing fast. The pantry serves local families, veterans, and first responders with dignity and fresh food twice a month.

When the pantry held its ribbon cutting celebration on November 2, leaders set an ambitious goal to raise $50,000 to stock shelves through the holiday season. The community response shocked everyone in the best way possible.

Nearly $42,500 came in at that single event. Neighbors showed up with donations, volunteer commitments, and a clear message that no one in their ZIP codes should go hungry.

"When government systems are not sufficient, it's the community that steps up," Ile said. "Every can, every dollar and every hour volunteered helps feed a neighbor."

The pantry operates as a partnership between North Canton City School District, local churches, and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. It welcomes residents from six ZIP codes, plus all veterans, active military, and first responders from anywhere.

Distribution happens on the second and fourth Monday of each month, with flexible time slots. Veterans and military families can shop from 10 a.m. to noon, parents juggling school pickup come from 1 to 3 p.m., and evening hours serve anyone who couldn't make it earlier.

The Ripple Effect

The bigger space means more than just extra square footage. It means a single mom working two jobs can grab groceries during evening hours, and a veteran dealing with food insecurity can shop with others who understand their service.

Associate Pastor Jeff Dayton from Summit Church, which still supports the pantry, put it simply: "We built this pantry to serve hope." That hope now reaches 40% more households every two weeks.

Anyone can help by volunteering to stock shelves or greet guests, donating money (just $25 feeds a family of four for a week), or dropping off needed items at Summit Church or the new pantry location. Details live at nccpantry.com.

When a community decides no neighbor goes hungry, beautiful things happen.
