North Carolina Aims to Train 30,000 in Life-Saving CPR

✨ Faith Restored

Thirty North Carolina counties are joining forces to break a world record by training 30,000 people in hands-only CPR this February. Onslow County is offering free training at four locations on Feb. 25, making it easier than ever to learn a skill that could save a life.

What if the person next to you suddenly collapsed, and you knew exactly what to do? That's the reality North Carolina wants to create for 30,000 people this month.

Onslow County is one of 30 counties across the state partnering with Duke University's RACE-CARS Trial to attempt a world record for the most people trained in hands-only CPR in a single effort. The training is completely free and designed to be simple enough for anyone to learn.

On February 25, four locations across Onslow County will open their doors for training sessions. Onslow Memorial Hospital, Coastal Carolina Community College, the Walmart on Yopp Road, and Albert J. Ellis Airport are all hosting events, making it convenient no matter where residents live or work.

"You never know when somebody is going to go into cardiac arrest," says Donna Pauly, Onslow County EMS Operations Chief. "It could be a family member, or it could be a friend. It can be somebody that you don't even know."

The training focuses on hands-only CPR, which skips mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and concentrates on chest compressions. This simplified approach removes barriers that might make bystanders hesitant to help during an emergency.

The Ripple Effect

When cardiac arrest happens outside a hospital, immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival. But currently, only about 40% of people who experience cardiac arrest in public receive help before emergency services arrive.

By training 30,000 North Carolinians in a single coordinated effort, this initiative could transform entire communities. Each trained person becomes a potential lifesaver, whether they're at a grocery store, a family gathering, or a youth soccer game.

The partnership between hospitals, EMS services, community colleges, and even retail locations shows how seriously North Carolina is taking this mission. Making training accessible at an airport and a Walmart means meeting people where they already are, removing excuses and obstacles.

This February, 30,000 North Carolinians could become everyday heroes, armed with knowledge that takes just minutes to learn but lasts a lifetime.
