North Carolina District Sees 15-Point Jump in Math, Science

A North Carolina school district just proved what happens when educators, families, and communities unite around a single mission: every student succeeds.

New Hanover County Schools is celebrating dramatic academic gains in 2026, including double-digit leaps in high school math and science proficiency. The district's graduation rate hit 89.4%, its highest mark in 10 years and above the state average.

The turnaround started in 2024 when district leaders identified Math 1, third-grade reading, and graduation rates as urgent priorities. They implemented targeted teaching strategies and support systems designed specifically for those areas.

The results speak louder than any strategy document ever could. Math 1 proficiency jumped nearly 15 percentage points, climbing from 32.4% to 47.1%. The district rocketed from 65th to 33rd place statewide.

Biology saw an even bigger surge, with proficiency rates soaring 15.4 points to reach 59.7%. That improvement pushed New Hanover from 52nd to 33rd among North Carolina districts.

The wins extended across grade levels too. Students in grades 3-8 scored 6 percentage points above the state average in math and ranked first among all surrounding districts in both reading and math.

Students with disabilities saw particularly meaningful progress, with graduation rates reaching 75.1%. That's up 8.4 percentage points over the past decade, proof that focused support works for every learner.

The Ripple Effect

New Hanover's success offers a blueprint for districts nationwide struggling with post-pandemic learning gaps. When schools identify specific weaknesses and attack them with evidence-based strategies, dramatic improvement is possible within just two years.

The district outperformed North Carolina's state average on 17 of 18 standardized assessments. Among its comparison group of 12 similar districts, New Hanover ranked in the top four on nine of 13 core measures.

Superintendent Dr. Christopher R. Barnes credited the gains to talented teachers, experienced administrators, and supportive families working together. He emphasized that rankings matter less than preparing every graduate for their next step, whether that's college, career, or military service.

The district plans to use these results to guide teaching plans, school improvements, and resource decisions for the coming school year. Celebration matters, Barnes noted, but so does continued focus on students who still need extra support.

For a district that was middle-of-the-pack just two years ago, New Hanover County Schools just showed how quickly determination and smart strategy can transform student outcomes.
