North Wales £240M Deal to Create 4,000 Jobs by 2036

North Wales is getting a major economic boost that promises to transform employment opportunities across the region for years to come.

The North Wales Growth Deal secured £240 million from UK and Welsh governments in 2020 to invest in transport, planning, and economic development projects. The partnership aims to attract a total of £1 billion in public and private funding by 2036, creating 4,000 jobs along the way.

So far, the deal has created 121 jobs across seven projects, including 63 full-time positions and 58 construction roles. While some Wrexham councillors questioned the pace, officials from Ambition North Wales reassured them the numbers will grow substantially as projects finish construction and open their doors.

"Job numbers will ramp up significantly over the next two to three years," said Hedd Vaughan-Evans from Ambition North Wales. He explained that early years naturally focus on planning and building, with most employment opportunities arriving once facilities become operational.

The partnership includes exciting projects like the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub, a £22 million green energy facility at Parc Cybi in Gwynedd. The Wrexham Gateway project plans to build a new transport hub and commercial development opposite Wrexham General train station, potentially creating 700 jobs alone.

Construction jobs will increase first as buildings go up. Once completed, these facilities will generate the majority of permanent positions across retail, transport, green energy, and other sectors.

This investment represents more than just job numbers. It's rebuilding economic infrastructure across north Wales, creating opportunities in emerging industries like hydrogen energy while improving transportation connections that will benefit residents for decades.

Officials acknowledge early challenges in delivering investments but remain committed to the timeline. Discussions continue with potential business occupiers for commercial spaces, and councillors will receive progress updates this November.
