Northern Lights Visible Across Northern US This Weekend

Skywatchers across the northern United States are getting a rare celestial treat this weekend, and it's all thanks to a massive opening in the sun's atmosphere.

The northern lights will likely be visible across multiple states Friday night and early Saturday morning, reaching as far south as New York, Idaho, and even parts of Illinois and Nebraska. When these particles reach our planet, most bounce off Earth's magnetic shield. But some slip through and travel toward the North and South poles, where they collide with atoms in the atmosphere and create the shimmering greens, purples, and reds we know as auroras.

This weekend's display is expected to be especially vibrant because of a corotating interaction region, a zone where fast solar winds pile up against slower ones ahead of them. This creates stronger impacts when the particles hit Earth's atmosphere, producing more dramatic light shows.
