Norway's Eitrem Wins Olympic Gold After Rocky Start

Sander Eitrem's first few strides looked like a disaster, but his final lap proved unstoppable.

The Norwegian speedskater nearly lost his balance at the starting gun during Sunday's 5,000-meter race at the Milan Cortina Olympics. Within seconds, he was already a quarter-second behind Italy's Riccardo Lorello at the first checkpoint.

Then something remarkable happened. By the 1,400-meter mark, Eitrem had erased his deficit and pulled ahead.

He kept building his lead with every lap, his powerful strokes eating up the ice. When he crossed the finish line at 6 minutes and 3.95 seconds, he had crushed the old Olympic record by nearly 6 seconds and beaten his nearest competitor by over 5 seconds.

Eitrem, who turns 24 this Thursday, shook his right fist and thrust it skyward as the crowd erupted. His time would have seemed impossible just weeks ago, but this is the same athlete who made history last month by becoming the first person ever to complete the 5,000 meters in under 6 minutes at a World Cup race in Germany.

The victory swept Norway to gold while 19-year-old Czech skater Metodej Jilek claimed silver, finishing 2.53 seconds behind. Lorello held on for bronze in front of his home crowd, turning Italy's disappointment into celebration.
