Norwegian Skier Klaebo Breaks Record With 9th Olympic Gold

Two athletes turned pain and persistence into Olympic glory this weekend, rewriting the record books in ways that left crowds cheering and experts amazed.

Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo anchored his team's relay victory Sunday to claim his ninth career Olympic gold medal. That breaks the previous record of eight golds, making the 29-year-old the most successful Winter Olympian in history.

Norway's prime minister watched as Klaebo crossed the finish line, cementing his place above skiing legends Marit Bjoergen and Bjoern Daehlie. The best part? He's not done yet, with two more chances to win gold before the Milan Cortina Games end.

But the weekend's most emotional victory belonged to Italy's Federica Brignone, skiing in front of her home crowd. Known as "the Tiger," she dominated the giant slalom for her second gold medal of these Olympics, despite still feeling pain from last year's devastating injury.

In March, Brignone shattered multiple bones in her leg so badly that doctors needed two surgeries and 42 stitches to repair it. She didn't return to skiing until January, just weeks before the Olympics began.

"Winning one gold medal made me feel like I was living in a movie," Brignone said after her super-G victory. Then she won the giant slalom too, becoming the oldest women's Alpine skiing Olympic champion ever at 34.

Two silver medalists, Sara Hector and Thea Louise Stjernesund, finished in the exact same time behind Brignone. Both bowed to her at the finish line to honor her remarkable achievement.

These victories show what the human body and spirit can accomplish when they refuse to accept limits. Brignone could have retired after her injury, but instead she fought through rehabilitation to return stronger than before. Klaebo didn't rest on his previous eight golds but kept pushing himself to new heights.

Host nation Italy celebrated wildly as Brignone's wins helped push their total to 22 medals, the country's best Winter Olympic performance ever. Norway leads all countries with 26 medals, 12 of them gold.
