Small dog on lead with owner at train station in Sydney, New South Wales

NSW Petition Seeks Pet-Friendly Train Carriages Trial

Feel Good

Over 6,500 people are backing a plan to let pets ride NSW trains in designated carriages, making public transport accessible for more residents. The two-year trial would follow Victoria's successful model.

Dog owners across New South Wales could soon travel with their furry friends on trains and metro services, if a growing petition succeeds in sparking change.

More than 6,500 people have signed on to support a two-year trial that would designate one carriage per train for passengers traveling with pets. Under the proposed rules, dogs would need to stay on a lead or in an approved carrier while riding.

Current NSW regulations ban dogs from train and metro stations entirely. Small pets in carriers can ride buses, ferries, and light rail only if the driver gives permission, creating a patchwork of confusing rules for pet owners.

Rosemary Lee, who organizes a social club for small dog owners in Sydney, launched the petition after members struggled to attend events. "We have a government that's very pro-taking public transport to events, but dog owners can't use it," she said.

The rules particularly impact apartment dwellers, seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income residents who don't own cars. For many, the choice becomes leaving pets home alone or skipping activities entirely.

Victoria already allows small animals on buses, trams, trains, and some regional services. Lee points to this as proof the system works without major problems.

The Bright Side

The proposal addresses safety concerns head-on. Pets would be confined to one clearly marked carriage, similar to existing quiet carriages that haven't reduced capacity for other passengers.

Lee notes that some pet owners already risk fines by sneaking animals onto trains. "This trial restricts all those animals into one carriage," she explained. "It actually removes any chance you've got of sitting beside a dog if you have an allergy or a concern."

Transport for NSW says it's aware of the campaign and welcomes community feedback. The department hasn't committed to the trial yet, but officials are listening.

The petition needs 20,000 signatures by November 4 to trigger a debate in NSW parliament. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore backed a similar 2023 campaign, arguing that "people with pets are still often made to feel like second-class citizens through unnecessarily restrictive policies."

With Victoria proving the concept works and thousands of residents calling for change, NSW might soon join other states in recognizing that modern public transport can accommodate both people and their four-legged companions.
