Nurse Caroline Wells Named Tasmania's 30th Governor
A lifelong healthcare champion who chairs Tasmania's Royal Flying Doctor Service will become the island state's next governor. Caroline Wells says she plans to "lead with kindness" when she takes office in June.
A registered nurse who spent decades caring for Tasmanians will now serve them in the highest ceremonial role in the state.
Caroline Wells received formal approval from King Charles III to become Tasmania's 30th governor. Premier Jeremy Rockliff announced the appointment Wednesday morning, praising Wells as "a fine Tasmanian, who has prioritized the health of our community for her entire working life."
Wells began her career as a nurse after graduating from the University of Tasmania. She climbed to senior leadership positions including director of nursing at two private hospitals in Hobart and St. Helen's.
Today she chairs the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania, bringing critical medical care to remote communities across the island state. She also serves as deputy chair of Southern Cross Care Tasmania and advises the premier on health and wellbeing policy.
Born and raised in Hobart, Wells admits the appointment caught her completely off guard. "It's certainly not a role that you apply for or even aspire to," she said. "I was in shock."
That shock has transformed into determined purpose. Wells plans to use the governor's platform to boost Tasmania's investment and trade opportunities while championing the social issues she knows best.
Why This Inspires
Wells embodies the servant leader Tasmania needs right now. Her "roll the sleeves up, get on with the job" approach comes from real experience caring for people at their most vulnerable.
She isn't abandoning her practical roots for ceremonial duties. Wells wants to leverage the governor's office to tackle real challenges, from health equity to economic growth.
And she's bringing her whole life with her. Wells will move into Government House with her partner, five daughters, six grandchildren, and Gus, her 17-year-old ginger cat who she promises is "adaptable."
Wells takes office June 17, replacing Governor Barbara Baker, whose four years of service Rockliff called "significant and meaningful." A nurse who spent her career healing individuals will now work to strengthen an entire state.
