Nurse Rescues Baby From Pakistan Hospital Fire That Killed 14

When fire broke out in a crowded hospital nursery in Pakistan's capital, most people ran away from the flames. Razia Noreen ran straight toward them.

The Christian nurse was working at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad on August 26 when smoke began filling the third-floor neonatal intensive care unit. Fifteen fragile newborns lay in the ward, receiving round-the-clock care.

Without hesitation, Noreen pushed through thick smoke and spreading flames to reach the babies. She emerged carrying one infant to safety, placing the child directly into the waiting arms of the baby's mother.

Tragically, 14 newborns died in the blaze. But one survived because a nurse chose courage over safety.

Noreen later told reporters she viewed every infant under her care as her own child. She fed them, changed them, and administered their medications daily. When disaster struck, that maternal bond drove her to act immediately.

Pakistan's government quickly recognized Noreen's bravery with a national award and cash prize. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif personally praised her devotion to duty and courage under pressure.

The recognition holds special meaning for Pakistan's Christian community, which makes up roughly 2% of the nation's population. Father Qaisar Feroze described Noreen's actions as a living example of Christian service and compassion in action.

"She has demonstrated the values of the Good Samaritan who saves and restores life," Father Feroze said. He called the moment a source of pride for Christians across Pakistan.

Noreen's story has resonated far beyond religious communities. Her response embodies something universal: the instinct to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
