Nurse Saves Choking Patient During Lunch Break in Savannah

Alicia McCullough was halfway through her lunch break at St. Joseph's Candler Hospital in Savannah when she noticed something terrifying: a fellow diner choking at a nearby table.

Without hesitation, the oncology nurse jumped into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver on Joanne Smith, a patient battling an autoimmune disorder that affects every muscle in her body, including those she needs to swallow. The quick thinking saved Smith's life.

"I was scared," Smith said afterward. "Alicia saved my life."

For McCullough, the moment was both frightening and surreal. She had never performed the life-saving technique outside of training.

"I was just glad to be in the right place at the right time," McCullough said. "Oh my God, like I really actually just saved this woman's life."

The dramatic rescue created an instant bond between the two women. Smith, a Bulloch County resident, said the experience deepened her appreciation for the nurses caring for her during her treatment.

"There's nothing that you can do that can pay for having your life extended another day," Smith said.

The Ripple Effect

The rescue happened just as National Nurses Week began, adding special meaning to the annual celebration honoring healthcare heroes. McCullough said the recognition during this week feels particularly meaningful after her unexpected moment of heroism.

"It feels good to just be noticed, to be recognized for the hard work that I do," she said.

St. Joseph's Candler is marking the week with five days of activities for their nursing staff, including themed breakfasts and therapy dog visits. Beaufort Memorial Hospital is also celebrating with scrubs sales, free coffee carts, and city council proclamations.

Restaurants and businesses across the region are joining the celebration too. Chipotle, Buffalo Wild Wings, McAlister's Deli, Ruby Tuesday's, and Crunch Fitness are all offering discounts to nurses this week.

McCullough's story reminds us that nurses don't just save lives in emergency rooms and operating theaters. Sometimes the most important moments happen during an ordinary lunch break, when training meets instinct and a life hangs in the balance.
