NYC Adding 700 EV Chargers, 7 Coming to Upper West Side

Electric vehicle owners on Manhattan's Upper West Side are about to get a lot more charging options as part of New York City's biggest infrastructure upgrade for clean transportation yet.

The NYC Department of Transportation just announced plans to add seven new curbside charging stations to the neighborhood, part of a massive expansion bringing the city's total from 88 chargers to nearly 700 over the next three years. That's an eightfold increase designed to meet growing demand from residents switching to electric vehicles.

The Upper West Side is getting special attention for good reason. A 2023 city study found the neighborhood's existing three charging stations are among the most used in all of New York City, with EV adoption running at least twice as high as the citywide average.

Over the past four years alone, more than 1,600 electric vehicles have been registered on the Upper West Side. Electric cars now account for 8.3% of all new vehicle registrations citywide, a number that keeps climbing as prices drop and charging becomes more convenient.

The new stations will join three chargers already installed in 2021 on West 76th, 84th, and 93rd Streets. Each new station provides two charging plugs and delivers up to 20 miles of range per hour of charging, enough for most daily commutes and errands.

The Ripple Effect

The expansion reflects how infrastructure investments create momentum for change. When cities make clean transportation easier, more people make the switch, which then justifies even more infrastructure in a positive cycle.

New York's partnership with ConEdison shows how utilities and city agencies can work together on climate solutions that actually serve residents' needs. The community feedback period running through September ensures locals have a say in where chargers go, making the infrastructure truly responsive to neighborhood patterns.
