NYC Adds 600 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations to Streets

New York City is bringing electric vehicle charging to hundreds of street corners in a massive expansion that could help taxi and rideshare drivers go green.

Brooklyn-based company it's electric won a contract announced Tuesday to install 600 new curbside charging stations across the city. That's nearly seven times more than the 88 charging points currently operating from the pilot program.

The expansion focuses on neighborhoods like Soundview, Rego Park, Red Hook, Washington Heights, and Stapleton, where many taxi and rideshare drivers live. These areas were chosen strategically to help meet the city's Green Rides rule, which requires all Uber and Lyft rides to be zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible by 2030.

Company founder Nathan King envisions a future where EV chargers are as common as fire hydrants on every street. The first installations are expected to begin in early 2027, with public feedback being accepted through September 30.

The need is real. Passenger vehicles, including rideshare cars, account for 17 percent of the city's greenhouse gas emissions. Electric vehicles currently make up only 8.3 percent of new vehicle registrations in the city, showing significant room for growth.

The existing pilot program has proven successful. Those 88 charging points are occupied by electric vehicles more than 70 percent of the time and deliver energy over 85 percent of the time they're in use, according to Con Edison.

This expansion represents New York City putting real infrastructure behind its climate commitments. By targeting neighborhoods with professional drivers first, the city is helping people who drive for a living make the switch to cleaner vehicles without the anxiety of where to charge.

The timing matters too. As the 2030 deadline for zero-emission rideshares approaches, drivers need accessible, reliable charging options to make the transition affordable and practical.

The city isn't stopping at curbside either. DOT is adding 92 fast charging points and 180 Level 2 charging stations at municipal lots and garages, creating a comprehensive network that works for different needs and schedules.

New York City is showing that climate action can meet people where they are, literally putting the tools for change on neighborhood streets where drivers live and work.
