NYC Magician Uses Tricks to Find Shelter Dogs New Homes

John Stessel has been perfecting magic tricks since he received his first magic kit at age eight. Twenty years later, he's using those skills to perform his most meaningful disappearing act yet: helping shelter dogs vanish from kennels into forever homes.

The self-dubbed "Shelter Dog Magician" partners with animal shelters across New York and New Jersey to create enchanting videos. His signature trick is simple but captivating: making a dog treat disappear right before a pup's eyes.

"Dogs really have one centralized focus, and that's usually their treats," Stessel told ABC News. "I thought, 'What if I made a treat disappear into thin air and catch their reaction on camera?'"

The results are pure magic. Each dog reacts differently to the vanishing snack, revealing unique personalities that might otherwise go unnoticed in shelter settings. Some pups tilt their heads in confusion, while others sniff frantically to track down the missing treat.

Stessel began collaborating with St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey to film these videos with adoptable dogs. He posts the clips on social media, where they rack up views and something even more valuable: adoption applications.

The shelter regularly sends him photos of dogs he's worked with after they find their forever homes. He's also partnered with Badass Animal Rescue, a New York organization that invites him to adoption events.

For Stessel, these tricks represent something deeper than entertainment. "It really is the most impactful work I've ever done," he told ABC. "Magic is that feeling when you truly are astonished by something, but it doesn't have to be a trick."

His work proves that sometimes the best magic isn't about illusion at all.
