Dylan Lopez Contreras embracing his mother Raiza during emotional reunion in Manhattan church

NYC Student Dylan Contreras Reunites with Family After 10 Months

🥲 Tearjerker

After 10 months in ICE detention, 20-year-old Dylan Lopez Contreras walked free and into his mother's arms at an emotional homecoming in Manhattan. Despite wearing an ankle monitor, the former high school student is focused on continuing his asylum case and advocating for others still detained.

When Dylan Lopez Contreras embraced his mother Raiza at Middle Collegiate Church in Manhattan's East Village, tears flowed freely after 10 months of separation. The 20-year-old had just been released from the Moshannon Valley ICE Processing Center in Pennsylvania, ending a detention his family and lawyers maintained was wrongful from the start.

Dylan entered the United States legally from Venezuela in April 2024 and was granted Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. He attended ELLIS Preparatory Academy in the Bronx, obtained work authorization, and was supporting his mother while pursuing asylum.

But on May 21, 2025, masked ICE agents arrested him outside 290 Broadway after an asylum court hearing. His attorneys maintained he had complied with all legal requirements and entered the country legally, but a federal judge ordered deportation last September. His legal team appealed.

On March 18, Dylan finally walked free. Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Kathy Hochul had advocated for his release, with Hochul personally giving his name to Trump Border Czar Tom Homan as a priority case.

At Thursday's celebration, Dylan wore an ankle monitor required by the Department of Homeland Security. But his thoughts weren't on his own freedom.

"I'm still sad that there are people still in there unjustly that deserve to be free as well," Dylan said through a translator. "I wish I had the opportunity to bring them all with me."

His mother Raiza could barely speak through her tears. "I appreciate everyone who has continued to support us in all aspects," she said. "I can't put it into words."

Mayor Zohran Mamdani welcomed Dylan home with warm words. "Above all else, Dylan is a New Yorker. He belongs in New York City. This city has been missing him."

Governor Hochul expressed hope that the change in Homeland Security leadership could bring "some sanity" to immigration enforcement focused on students.

Why This Inspires

Dylan's story reminds us that families never stop fighting for each other. Despite facing nearly a year of separation, uncertainty, and legal battles, Dylan and his mother held onto hope. Even more moving is Dylan's immediate concern for others still detained, showing that resilience and compassion can coexist even after hardship.

Now Dylan can return to school and continue building the life he came here seeking, while his case moves through the legal system.
