Mayor Mamdani playing soccer with children on new mini pitch in Central Park

NYC's Free World Cup Party Opens 50,000 Spots

😊 Feel Good

New York City is throwing a massive free watch party for 50,000 fans during the World Cup Final on July 19 in Central Park. At a time when sports events increasingly price out working families, the city is ensuring everyone can join the celebration.

New York City just announced that 50,000 people will get to watch the World Cup Final for free on giant screens in Central Park's Great Lawn this July 19.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani made the announcement Monday morning after playing soccer with local kids on a brand new mini pitch in the park. Standing alongside soccer legend George Weah, he framed the event as a win for fairness in sports.

"In a moment where sports experiences and the memories they create have grown increasingly unattainable for working people, we will make this viewing party 100% free," Mamdani said.

The massive event will feature three large LED screens, concert-quality sound, live entertainment, and local food vendors. iHeartRadio hosts Charlamagne tha God and Elvis Duran will emcee, and fans will get to watch the halftime show featuring Shakira, Madonna, and BTS.

New Yorkers can enter the free lottery starting Thursday, June 11 at 10 a.m. by visiting globalcitizen.org/watchparty. The only requirement is reading a short article about the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. The lottery runs through July 16, and 20% of tickets are reserved for local nonprofits and volunteers.

The watch party comes as World Cup ticket prices have sparked outrage and an investigation by state attorneys general into FIFA's ticketing practices. Mamdani himself launched a "Game Over Greed" petition last year criticizing FIFA for pricing out locals.

But the mayor pointed to concrete wins from working with FIFA, including securing 1,000 World Cup tickets at just $50 each with free round-trip transportation. No other host city achieved that deal.

The Ripple Effect

The free watch party is just one piece of a larger effort to make the World Cup accessible across all five boroughs. The city is hosting free fan festivals in each borough, launching a discounted dining program at hundreds of local restaurants, and bringing field days to 50 public schools.

The mini soccer pitch in Central Park will stay open through July 18 with free clinics and open play sessions run by Street Soccer USA.

Mamdani closed his remarks by honoring George Weah, who never got to play in a World Cup despite being one of the greatest players of his generation. "We cannot go back in time," the mayor said. "We will do the next best thing. We will make this World Cup one that as many people as possible can participate in."

For working families who've watched sports become an increasingly expensive luxury, 50,000 free seats to the biggest game in the world is a powerful reminder that celebration doesn't have to come with a price tag.
