Ocala Hosts Citywide Juneteenth Reunion With Music and Laughs

Ocala, Florida is turning Juneteenth into one big family reunion this year, and everyone's invited.

Organizers are hosting a free celebration at Webb Park that brings together comedy, live music, and food to honor the day enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free. Jonathan Slocum will perform clean comedy while Steve Ray Ladson, who performed on America's Got Talent, will play banjo.

The event starts at noon Friday at the MLK Recreation Complex on West Silver Springs Boulevard. It's designed to feel less like a formal commemoration and more like gathering with family.

Slocum wants people to understand what they're celebrating beyond just knowing Juneteenth is a federal holiday. "First of all, do your research. Find out what it means," he said. "But more than anything, it's a celebration of our freedom."

He emphasized the unique history behind the day. "For a long time, we didn't know we were free. Then, ding, black folks are free."

The Ripple Effect

The celebration reflects a growing movement to make Juneteenth accessible and educational for entire communities. By framing it as a citywide family reunion, organizers are creating space for people of all backgrounds to learn together.

Slocum believes understanding cultural history benefits everyone. "That's a part of the whole education and knowing about our culture. Everyone should know and learn and understand," he said.

The event combines entertainment with education, making complex history approachable through shared joy. When communities gather to celebrate freedom, they're also creating new connections and understanding.
