Offline EV Chargers Get Fix That Works Without Internet
Two companies just solved one of electric vehicle drivers' biggest frustrations: chargers that fail because they can't get online. The retrofit works even in underground garages where internet is weakest.
Nothing kills the EV charging experience faster than pulling up to a charger that won't connect, leaving you stranded with a low battery and no backup plan.
Emobi and HeyCharge just announced a partnership that fixes this problem without ripping out existing chargers. Their solution lets older EV chargers work reliably even in places with terrible internet, like underground parking garages and dense city buildings where signals barely reach.
Here's how it works: HeyCharge, based in Munich, makes hardware that enables smart charging without needing an internet connection. Emobi provides the roaming network that makes those upgraded chargers visible across more than 140,000 charging stations in the US and Canada.
Property owners can retrofit their struggling chargers instead of replacing them completely. Once upgraded, the chargers support app-free charging where drivers just plug in and go, no cards or extra hardware needed.
The system also adds features that offline chargers typically lack: session tracking, energy-based billing, and real-time availability updates. Drivers get fewer failed charging attempts in exactly the spots where connectivity used to be worst.

For charging operators and fleet managers, the benefits stack up quickly. Installation time drops, network upgrade costs disappear, and uptime improves in locations that were previously impossible to serve reliably.
The Ripple Effect
This fix arrives at exactly the right moment. As more drivers switch to electric vehicles, the charging infrastructure needs to work everywhere, not just in areas with strong cellular coverage.
The partnership addresses a gap that's been holding back EV adoption in cities and older buildings. When charging becomes as reliable as filling up with gas, more people feel confident making the switch to electric.
Emobi CEO Lin Sun Fa says the solution tackles "one of the most persistent challenges in EV charging: unreliable or offline chargers that were never designed for modern connectivity." HeyCharge CEO Chris Carde adds that charging needs to work everywhere, not only where the internet is strong.
By combining offline technology with a massive roaming network, the companies are making EV charging work in places it never could before.
Reliable charging in every parking spot means fewer range anxiety moments and more drivers ready to go electric.
