Ohio Awards $198K to 198 Scholar-Athletes Like Carson Proper

Carson Proper's hard work just paid off in a big way. The Danville graduate is one of 198 Ohio high school seniors receiving scholarship money from the state's athletic association, proving that dedication to both books and sports really does open doors.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association awarded $198,000 total to graduating athletes across the state this year. Each recipient earned their scholarship through a point system that rewards grade point averages, class rank, community service hours, varsity letters, and athletic achievements.

Proper walked away with $1,000 to help fund his college education. That money comes from students who showed they could handle early morning practices and late night study sessions without dropping the ball on either.

The program looks beyond just the star quarterbacks and MVP award winners. Students who receive Division I or II athletic scholarships or military academy appointments aren't eligible, making sure these funds go to well-rounded students who might not have full rides waiting.

The OHSAA didn't stop with student scholarships. The organization also sent $1,250 to each of Ohio's 816 member high schools, totaling over $1 million to help athletic departments cover equipment, uniforms, transportation, and officials.

The Ripple Effect

This scholarship program has grown into something special over its 32 years. The organization distributed $200,000 in both 2024 and 2025, marking the highest totals in program history and bringing the three-year total to $598,000 for graduating seniors.

"These scholar-athletes represent the very best of education-based athletics," said OHSAA executive director Doug Ute. His organization created the Athletic Enrichment Fund in 2023 specifically to pour money back into schools and students, even funding programs to improve sportsmanship and fan behavior at games.

The selection process happens at the district level, with special committees in each of Ohio's six athletic districts choosing recipients. The number of scholarships awarded per district depends on how many schools that district serves, keeping the distribution fair across urban and rural communities.

Students like Proper prove that the Friday night lights can shine on paths beyond professional sports contracts.
