Ohio Caddie Wins Full College Scholarship for Service

✨ Faith Restored

A Rocky River high school student who carried golf clubs to help his family just earned a full ride to college. Dominic Kovi is one of 380 caddies nationwide selected for the prestigious Evans Scholarship.

Dominic Kovi spent his high school years lugging golf bags and tracking ball flights at Westwood Country Club, never imagining the work would change his life. Now the Rocky River senior has earned an Evans Scholarship covering full tuition and housing at college.

"I never even thought it could happen, and I'm so grateful," Dominic said. His gratitude runs deeper than most might realize.

Dominic's family faced difficult choices when his younger brother, who has Down Syndrome, began suffering seizures. His father Mark left his teaching job at Firelands High School to care for him full time. His mother Shanna works as associate principal at Gilles-Sweet Elementary School in Fairview Park.

The scholarship came from dedication both on the course and in the classroom. Caddies spend hours waiting for assignments, then work through 18 holes carrying equipment, cleaning clubs, knowing exact distances to every pin, and keeping groups moving smoothly.

But the physical work is only part of the equation. Evans Scholars must demonstrate academic excellence, outstanding character, and financial need. Dominic balanced strong grades with extracurricular activities while working at the club.

The "Chick" Evans Scholarship was established in 1930 by amateur golf legend Charles "Chick" Evans Jr. through the Western Golf Association. Since then, more than 12,575 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars.

Why This Inspires

The scholarship's track record shows what happens when opportunity meets determination. Evans Scholars maintain an average 3.3 GPA and achieve a remarkable 98 percent graduation rate. Forty percent are first-generation college students, breaking new ground for their families.

Dominic is one of 21 Ohio students receiving the award this year, joining a national class of approximately 380 caddies. The program currently supports a record 1,260 students at 27 universities nationwide.

His boss at Westwood Country Club introduced him to the opportunity and explained the criteria. From there, Dominic put in the hours, both studying and serving golfers on the course.

For a family that made sacrifices so one son could get the care he needed, this scholarship means Dominic can pursue his education without adding financial strain. His parents are beyond excited and grateful.

Sometimes the path to college starts not in a classroom, but on a golf course, carrying someone else's clubs toward your own future.
