Ohio Family Celebrates 100th Annual Reunion Milestone

When the Keeling family gathered in Mineral Ridge, Ohio last Saturday, they weren't just sharing a meal. They were celebrating a full century of annual reunions, a tradition that has survived world wars, economic downturns, and the passing of generations.

More than 60 family members traveled from across Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and North Carolina to mark the milestone. Some drove over three hours just to see cousins they grew up with at their grandparents' home decades ago.

"My brothers and I were really interested in making sure we got to 100," said Greg Keeling of Mineral Ridge. "We were going to do whatever it took to do it and everybody kicked in."

The day featured homemade dishes including eggplant lasagna, pierogies, and sausage with peppers. Classic games like Water Balloon Toss kept kids laughing in the summer heat, just like their parents and grandparents before them.

Karen Zwigart made the three-and-a-half-hour drive from State College, Pennsylvania. "I often wondered how grandma could stand all of us. We had 35 first cousins," she said with a smile.

The family traces its roots to 1739 in Snelston, Derbyshire, England. When steel mill work declined, several Keelings crossed the Atlantic and settled in Niles, Ohio, finding factory jobs and building new lives.

Old photos displayed on a tri-fold board showed faces from generations past. A banner reading "Family Roots Run Deep, Our Love Runs Deeper" anchored a collection of ancestor photos dating back centuries.

Rich Keeling of Warren remembered childhood reunions in a Canfield barn with over 100 people. "There was a dance floor upstairs where all the kids would run around and play and have a good time," he recalled.

For the past two years, Krista Mannion has organized the event at her home, taking over after her father Brian passed away. "Last year was stressful, but doing it prepared me for this year," she said. "You just come together and make it happen."
