Ohio Firefighters Save Farmer Trapped in Grain Silo 3 Hours
When Mark Berry fell into a 35-foot grain silo two days after Christmas, firefighters had just three hours to save him before the corn suffocated him. They pulled it off, and now they're getting the recognition they deserve.
Patrick Compton had trained for grain bin rescues but never expected to use those skills. Then came December 27th, when a man's life depended on everything he'd learned.
Mark Berry was trapped in a grain silo near Bellville, Ohio, buried up to his chest in dried corn. He managed to call his wife using his Bluetooth headset, who immediately dialed 911. By the time Troy Township firefighters arrived, Berry had been stuck for at least 20 minutes in conditions that work like quicksand.
The scene was daunting. A 35-foot silo, three-quarters full of corn, with Berry 8 to 10 feet from the nearest exit. One wrong move could pull him under completely.
Firefighter Brenden Ganshorn, a rescue technician with military training, was lowered into the silo on a harness and pulley system. He kept his hand on Berry's hand the entire time, even when Berry briefly lost consciousness and sank beneath the corn. Meanwhile, crews cut holes around the silo to release the grain.

The rescue took three hours of coordinated effort from seven fire departments. Once the corn level dropped below halfway, firefighters entered with large metal shovels and dug Berry out by hand, using the same shovels to hold back the flowing grain.
Berry was rushed to the hospital and survived. Last month, firefighters Patrick Compton, Matt Lyon, Brenden Ganshorn, and Lt. Aaron Hoptry received Star of Life awards from the Ohio Public Safety Department.
Why This Inspires
Grain bin rescues are incredibly rare. Chief Rich Compton says it had been 30 years since their department faced one. Yet when the moment came, these firefighters executed a complex, dangerous rescue with precision that saved a life.
Patrick Compton's humble response says it all: "To us, it was just another day." But for Mark Berry and his family, it was the day strangers risked their own safety to bring him home.
