Ohio Nonprofit Helps 483 Veterans With $218K in Support

Tami Robinson never knows what the next call will bring. One day a veteran needs help with a utility bill, the next day someone moving into a new home needs furniture and dishes.

Whatever the request, Robinson finds a way to help. That simple approach has transformed Love Our Hero's from a modest thrift store into a powerful resource for veterans and their families across 18 counties in Ohio.

The Bellville nonprofit operates out of a 9,000-square-foot space at 24 Bell St. Inside, military uniforms and memorabilia line the walls, each piece donated by veterans who served. Household items fill shelves and tables, available for whatever donation customers can afford.

But this isn't just a store. It's a museum where every item tells a story.

Robinson says veterans often become emotional walking through the space. Some recognize equipment from their own service. Others spot items that belonged to family members who served.

The military memorabilia isn't for sale. Love Our Hero's displays these pieces to honor the veterans who donated them, creating a living tribute to their sacrifice.

Local businesses have rallied behind the mission. Miller's Hawkins Market has become a steady partner, hosting multiple fundraisers throughout the year. Store Manager Karen Graves first learned about Love Our Hero's from a chiropractor's office flyer in 2022.

She bought two tables to the organization's purse bingo and brought 18 team members. That single event sparked an ongoing partnership.

Last November, Miller's raised about $2,500 through $1 decals that customers signed and placed on store windows. The team plans to continue supporting Love Our Hero's through rib fests, purse bingo events, and an upcoming beauty pageant in October.

Graves says her team doesn't help for recognition. They do it because veterans sacrificed for their country, and supporting them feels like the right thing to do.

The Ripple Effect

The impact extends far beyond donated items. Veterans transitioning into new housing can walk through the store and choose household items to make their new place feel like home. Robinson says these simple items represent something much bigger: hope and a fresh start.

The numbers tell the story of that impact. Love Our Hero's has helped 483 veterans and provided more than $218,000 in assistance. But Robinson notes those figures change constantly because the needs never stop.

She doesn't know what tomorrow's call for help will be. But she knows she'll be there to answer it, backed by a community that refuses to forget those who served.
