Ohio Program Expands to Help Crawford County Fight Poverty

After 14 years of helping people break free from poverty in Marion, Ohio, a powerful program is expanding to serve even more families in need.

Marion Matters announced the launch of Crawford Matters in Bucyrus this April, bringing its successful "Bridges Out of Poverty" framework to Crawford County. The program has already graduated nearly 500 people in Marion since 2011, many of whom have moved from crisis to stability.

Unlike traditional assistance programs that simply provide temporary help, Crawford Matters takes a different approach. The initiative focuses on building what it calls 11 key resources including financial skills, emotional health, and social connections that create lasting change.

"We aren't just handing out a resource; we are educating and training a mindset to help people become all around a little more stable," said Natalie Longmeier, Executive Director. That holistic philosophy addresses the root causes of poverty rather than just the symptoms.

The expansion includes "Getting Ahead" classes now running at the Crawford Success Center. Participants learn practical skills for managing money, finding stable housing, and securing better employment opportunities.

Crawford Matters also hired a community resource navigator to connect residents directly with services they need. This personal guidance helps people avoid getting lost in complex systems when seeking housing assistance, job training, or financial literacy support.

The United Way of North Central Ohio and Crawford Community Foundation backed the expansion after successful pilot programming showed strong community need. Their investment reflects confidence that what worked in Marion can transform lives in Crawford County too.
