Ohio Senior Lands College Sports Spot After State Meet

Geneva High School senior Ella Haeseler finished 11th in Division III discus at the Ohio state meet this past Saturday, capping off her high school career with her eyes set firmly on the future.

The achievement marks serious progress from her junior year, when she placed 17th at the state meet. Her best throw of 113 feet, 5 inches fell just two spots short of making the finals, but Haeseler walked away with something far more valuable than a trophy.

This fall, she'll continue throwing discus at Cleveland State University while studying business. The senior says she's excited to take her athletic career to the next level and see what she can accomplish with college-level coaching.

Her mother and coach, Annah Haeseler, put the day in perspective. "Throwing is technical, you either have it on a specific day or you don't," she explained, noting that Ella's personal best of 123 feet would have easily made the finals.

What makes Ella's story truly special is the legacy she's continuing. Her grandfather, Mark Debevc, set the Ashtabula County discus record back in 1967 at 192 feet, 1 inch. That record still stands today, nearly 60 years later.

The Geneva discus tradition goes back even further to the early 1900s, when Cloyce Hammond won the state championship. Now Ella is writing the next chapter, preparing for orientation at Cleveland State on July 11.

She's not waiting around to start improving, either. Between shifts at a local winery, Ella practices at the discus circle she has at home and plans to work out at area track facilities while waiting for training guidance from her new college coaches.

A crowd of Geneva High School administrators, coaches, and family members made the trip to Columbus to cheer her on, showing the kind of community support that helps young athletes dream bigger.
