Ohio Senior Wins $158K Full-Tuition Scholarship

Violet Seaman was pulled from class by her principal and walked into a room full of family members. The 17-year-old Lake High School senior had no idea what was happening.

Then she saw the oversized check. Seaman had won one of five presidential scholarships to Thiel College in Pennsylvania, covering four years of tuition worth $158,080.

"I thought I was in trouble," Seaman said. "I never expected this in a million years."

The scholarship came after a competitive process that drew more than 150 students. Seaman participated in group and individual interviews with faculty and staff, though she never expected to win.

She had seen two other scholarship winners announced before her and felt intimidated by their achievements. "I didn't have the same attributes and they did a lot in their communities," she said.

But being herself during the interviews paid off. On January 23, admissions counselor Mez Tobias surprised her at school with the news.

"We think you are a very good fit and we're excited to invest money into you," Tobias told her.

Seaman is a student in the biomedical sciences program at Hoover High School and plans to pursue nursing with a focus on pediatrics. She'll also continue her volleyball career at Thiel, a Division III school in Greenville, Pennsylvania.

The well-rounded student plays volleyball and softball, has played piano since age 5, and even joined the basketball team last year to try something new. She's also participated in ROX, a national program that helps girls build confidence and life skills.

Principal Dan Harold praised Seaman's dedication. "I never had to worry about her," he said, adding she squeezed everything she could out of high school.
