Ohio University Ranks Top 25 for AR/VR Programs

Ohio University is proving that the future of immersive technology is being built in the Midwest. The school's McClure School of Emerging Communication Technologies just earned a spot among the top 25 public institutions in the United States for AR/VR programs, according to Animation Career Review.

The ranking evaluated over 80 schools based on academic reputation, graduate employment success, admission standards, and tuition value. Ohio University landed at number 21 among public schools and 37th overall when including private institutions.

The university offers two distinct pathways for students interested in immersive tech. The Virtual Reality and Game Development major lets students customize their studies around game design, art, and storytelling while pairing technical skills with business or communication minors. The Information and Telecommunication Systems track focuses on the infrastructure side, teaching network design, cybersecurity, and cloud systems with a specific concentration in AR/VR applications.

Students get real-world experience through the Game Research and Immersive Design Lab and the university's Esports Arena. This hands-on approach is working: graduates have landed positions at major players like Microsoft, Walt Disney Imagineering, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Google, and Ubisoft.

The timing couldn't be better. Demand for immersive tech talent is exploding across industries from gaming to healthcare, and companies need professionals who understand both the creative and technical sides of the field.
