Oklahoma Hospital Celebrates 39 Years of Cancer Survivor Events

Hundreds gathered in Oklahoma City Sunday to celebrate something truly worth cheering about: more cancer survivors than ever before living fuller, longer lives.

INTEGRIS Health Cancer Institute marked nearly four decades of hosting its annual Celebration of Life, bringing together patients at every stage of their cancer journey. Survivors shared hugs with their medical teams while families enjoyed therapy dog visits and live music under the Oklahoma sun.

Dr. Clary Reed, a thoracic oncologist with INTEGRIS Health, watched patients she's treated dance and laugh together. "We're really just out here having a great day celebrating another year of patients who are here with cancer who are doing well," Reed said.

The event serves multiple purposes beyond celebration. Support groups for breast cancer, lung cancer, and other diagnoses set up tables to connect with newly diagnosed patients seeking community and hope.

The Ripple Effect

The celebration represents something bigger than one day of festivities. It's part of Oklahoma's growing commitment to improving cancer care across a historically underserved state.

"Here in Oklahoma, historically, cancer care has been a difficult thing due to the rural nature of the state and funding," Reed explained. "It's something that's been getting better each year, and INTEGRIS has been really supportive."

Dr. Bilal Ahmad, a hematologist and oncologist with INTEGRIS, emphasized how events like this create awareness that extends far beyond hospital walls. "This event is very important to bring awareness to the community, to Oklahoma City, and to celebrate the patients and families who have been struggling, who have been dealing with cancer," Ahmad said.

The ceremony included special recognition for caregivers and healthcare professionals who walk alongside patients through their toughest battles. For newly diagnosed patients attending, seeing survivors years out from treatment offered tangible hope during uncertain times.

INTEGRIS Health's 39 years of consecutive celebrations means some attendees have watched their own children grow up, attended weddings, and welcomed grandchildren because of advances in cancer treatment and care.

Every survivor present Sunday represents not just a medical victory, but countless moments of joy their families get to experience together.
