Oklahoma Theater Brings 9/11 Kindness Story to Stage

On September 11, 2001, a small Canadian town became an unexpected beacon of hope when the world needed it most.

Lyric Theatre in Oklahoma City is now performing "Come From Away," the true story of Gander, Newfoundland, a community of just 9,000 people who suddenly hosted 7,000 stranded airline passengers. When the FAA ordered every plane in American airspace to land immediately after the attacks, 38 aircraft diverted to Gander's airport.

What happened next became one of the most powerful examples of human kindness to emerge from that dark day. The townspeople opened their homes, schools, and community centers to complete strangers from around the world.

"It's the best reflection of humanity to accommodate these 7,000 passengers," said one of the cast members bringing these real stories to life. The musical portrays actual residents of Gander and the passengers whose lives they touched.

The production runs through mid-October at the Plaza District location. Its popularity has already prompted the theater to add extra performances, giving more audiences a chance to experience this intimate production.
