Colorful speaker made from recycled Barbie dolls featuring swirled pink and purple marbled pattern

Old Barbies Become Speakers in Mattel-Gomi Partnership

Mind Blown

A UK design studio is turning childhood Barbie dolls into beautiful tech products like speakers and chargers. Each piece features a unique swirled pattern made from melted-down toys that once sparked joy.

Your old Barbie dolls might get a second life as the speaker charging your phone.

Gomi, a sustainable design studio in the UK, just launched an official collaboration with Mattel to transform discarded Barbie dolls into working tech products. The Childhood Memories Collection includes speakers, power banks, wireless chargers, and tracker tags, each featuring a one-of-a-kind marbled pattern in bright pinks, purples, and turquoise.

The products work like regular electronics, but they're made from melted-down Barbie dolls, accessories, and other recovered plastics. Even the batteries get a second chance at life, using recycled lithium from old e-bike batteries.

Gomi has been fighting plastic waste since 2017, focusing on flexible plastics that most UK recycling programs reject. The company created its first speaker in 2023, with each one using the equivalent of about 44 plastic bags.

The signature swirl effect happens when plastic melts at the lowest possible temperature. Workers stack the color layers, twist them by hand, and cut them to create patterns that look more like modern art than recycled waste.

The Ripple Effect

Working with inconsistent waste streams isn't easy. Different plastics vary in quality and shrink at different rates, so Gomi uses textured molds to make sure every piece still looks and feels premium.

The collaboration started after Gomi made Barbie speakers following the 2023 movie release. Cofounder Tom Meades reached out to Mattel months later, and the toy giant jumped at the partnership opportunity.

The products cost between $45 and $371, positioning them as premium tech accessories with a story. But the real value might be emotional rather than practical.

"I'm not sure anyone has ever made electronics from recycled materials that have so much sentimentality attached to them," Meades says. Those childhood dolls that once inspired imaginative play are now powering the devices we use every day.

The partnership gives Gomi major brand recognition while offering Mattel a tangible sustainability win beyond corporate pledges. And for customers, it's a chance to keep childhood memories alive in a surprisingly practical way.
