Olympic Gold Goalie Named NASCAR Grand Marshal in Michigan

The goalie who stopped Team Canada's dynasty is about to deliver the most famous four words in motorsports.

Connor Hellebuyck, the Michigan-born hockey star who led Team USA to Olympic gold just months ago, will serve as grand marshal for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on June 7. The Commerce Township native gets to tell drivers to start their engines in front of thousands of fans in his home state.

The timing couldn't be better. Hellebuyck's stunning performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics turned him into an overnight national hero. He stopped an incredible 95.62% of shots across six games, including 41 of 42 saves in the gold medal match against Canada.

That victory ended a 46-year drought. The U.S. men's hockey team hadn't won gold since the legendary "Miracle on Ice" in 1980, and Hellebuyck's heroics against nine-time champions Canada became the most-watched event of the entire Olympics.

Now the 33-year-old Winnipeg Jets goalkeeper is coming home to celebrate with Michigan fans. His journey from local kid to four-time NHL All-Star, three-time Vezina Trophy winner, and 2025 MVP mirrors the grit and excellence Michigan takes pride in.
