Olympic Gold Medalist Haleigh Washington Headlines Sonoma Talk

When Haleigh Washington helped Team USA win its first-ever Olympic gold medal in women's indoor volleyball in Tokyo 2021, she proved that disciplined dreams can become reality. Now she's bringing that winning mindset to Sonoma State University.

Washington headlines the Inspire Sonoma speaker series on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom A. The event is free and available both in person and on Zoom.

The two-time Olympic medalist will share her journey from Penn State freshman to professional athlete competing across the globe. Her talk covers the discipline of excellence, how readers become leaders, and the power of dreaming big while starting small.

Washington's athletic career reads like a masterclass in perseverance. She started as a freshman on Penn State's 2014 NCAA Championship team and earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. By senior year, she was named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year and achieved three-time Academic and Athletic All American status.

After graduating with a philosophy degree, Washington played professionally in Italy for five different clubs, earning medals in domestic and international tournaments including a CEV Championship in 2023. She's also a founding athlete for LeagueOne Volleyball, America's newest major sports league, currently competing for LOVB Los Angeles.

Her Olympic credentials shine brightest. Washington joined USA's Women's Indoor Volleyball Team in 2018 and collected medals at nearly every major tournament since. At the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, she started for Team USA's historic gold medal win and earned Best Middle Blocker honors.

She added a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, cementing her status as one of volleyball's elite players.

Inspire Sonoma runs through early November with additional speakers exploring how education, healthcare, technology, and leadership shape Sonoma County's future. The series includes the SSU Makeathon October 23-25, where student teams will create viable products in 48 hours.
