Olympic Gold Medalist Hayley Scamurra Meets Hero Josh Allen

Buffalo hockey star Hayley Scamurra spent her childhood braving freezing temperatures at Bills games with her dad and three brothers, rooting for her hometown team from the stands. Last week, she stood on the sideline of Bills practice as an Olympic gold medalist while Josh Allen walked straight toward her to shake her hand.

The 31-year-old from Getzville helped Team USA win gold at the Milan Cortina Games in February, capping an undefeated tournament with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against Canada. After scoring two goals in the opening game against Czechia, Scamurra celebrated on camera and couldn't contain her excitement at the thought that Allen might be watching.

Word traveled back to Buffalo, and the Bills quarterback and his team reached out with an invitation to spring practice. On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Scamurra got the VIP treatment with a stadium tour, jersey exchange with Allen, and the chance to let him try on her five-pound gold medal.

"Trying on a gold medal felt like stolen valor," Allen said after feeling its weight. "There's a figurative weight that goes along with that. I've got so much respect for her and what they did in representing our country."

For Scamurra, the shiny medal around her neck helped calm her nerves meeting her childhood hero. "It helped ground me a little bit to be like, 'OK, I have something to share with you,'" she explained with a smile.

The meeting represents more than just a fan moment for Scamurra. She's now a member of hockey's exclusive Triple Gold Club, having won three world championships, Olympic gold, and most recently the PWHL Walter Cup championship with the Montreal Victoire just two weeks before her Bills visit.

Bills coach Joe Brady jumped at the chance to meet an Olympic champion, calling the experience "pretty bad-ass" and spending five minutes chatting with Scamurra during practice. Players and staff gathered around to congratulate her and hear stories from Milan.

For Scamurra, who also won silver at the 2022 Beijing Games, the achievement keeps revealing itself in new ways. "It's like you almost forget about it a little bit," she said. "And then you come here and celebrate it again with everyone, and it kind of invigorates you."

Standing on that sunny practice field where she once only dreamed of being, Scamurra's journey from the cold bleachers to the sideline as an honored guest shows what dedication and Olympic dreams can accomplish.
