Olympic Gold Medalists Get Engaged on Ice in Japan

Olympic gold medalists Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara took their partnership from the ice rink to forever, announcing their engagement on Instagram with photos of a perfectly fitting proposal on ice.

The Japanese pairs figure skating champions, known affectionately as "RikuRyu," shared the happy news on August 22. In the photos, Kihara kneels on the ice with a ring box while Miura beams above him, and playful shots show them admiring the ring together.

"Through both the happy times and the difficult ones, we've shared so many moments together, supporting each other every step of the way," Miura, 24, wrote in both Japanese and English. "Over time, we became irreplaceable parts of each other's lives, someone neither of us could imagine life without."

The couple's relationship grew from a professional skating partnership that began in 2019. They made their international competitive debut together at that year's NHK Trophy competition, building chemistry both on and off the ice.

Their hard work paid off spectacularly at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where they earned a silver medal in the team event. But their biggest triumph came at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games, where they made history as the first Japanese pair to win gold in figure skating.

At Milan Cortina, they didn't just win, they dominated. The pair set a world record with their free skate score of 158.13 points and also claimed another team silver medal.
