Olympic Legend Kaillie Humphries Fights for Girls' Sports

Kaillie Humphries knows what it takes to push a 400-pound bobsled down an ice track at six g's. Now the six-time Olympic medalist is using that same determination to protect the future of women's sports.

The 40-year-old bobsledder recently became an ambassador for Independent Women, where she's fighting to preserve the opportunities that helped her make history. Her mission is simple: make sure girls have the same fair chance she did.

Humphries' journey started in Calgary, where the 1988 Winter Olympics sparked her childhood dream. She switched from skiing to bobsled as a teenager, and just three years later, she competed in her first Olympics.

The victories kept coming. She won Olympic gold in two-woman bobsled in 2010 and 2014 for Canada, then bronze in 2019. After becoming a U.S. citizen, she won gold in the inaugural women's monobob in 2022, then added two more bronze medals in 2026.

That impressive track record is exactly why she feels responsible for protecting women's sports today. "I've been able to live out my goals and dreams as an athlete, as an Olympic gold medalist, do it multiple times, make history," she said.

Sports gave Humphries more than medals. She learned teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and how to trust herself and others. She built lifelong friendships and found a community of strong women cheering her on at every level.

Why This Inspires

Humphries isn't just celebrating her own success. She's actively working to ensure biological females can continue competing on a level playing field, free from the physical advantages that male biology brings.

Her message to young athletes is clear: stand up for what matters. "Fight for the things that are worth fighting for," she said. "Creating that space to protect women's sports, to keep it for biological women, not for an identity, but a space that is for women based on sex is worth fighting for."

She encourages girls and women to speak up even when facing opposition. "Stand up, pick and choose your battles, but definitely don't just stay silent because you're told to," she said.

For Humphries, legacy means more than her medal count. She wants girls dreaming of athletic careers to know their opportunities will be waiting, protected and preserved for generations to come.
