Olympic Skaters Kam and O'Shea Bring Gold Home to Colorado

Two figure skaters who learned their craft in the shadow of Colorado's mountains just turned their childhood dreams into Olympic gold.

Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea returned home to Colorado Springs last week carrying gold medals from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. The pair helped secure victory for Team USA in the team figure skating event, competing on the Olympic stage for the first time in their careers.

"The hard work we have both put in for decades is coming true, literal dreams coming true," O'Shea told local reporters. His smile tells the story better than words can. "I haven't stopped smiling in about a month."

Their partnership began right where they train today. Colorado Springs became the birthplace of their skating relationship, and the city's Olympic Training Center community pushed them toward excellence.

Kam took her first wobbly steps on ice at just four years old at the Air Force Academy. "They had such a great program," she remembers. Those early lessons on military base ice eventually led to an Olympic podium halfway around the world.

What makes their story special goes beyond medals and podiums. Kam and O'Shea built something rare in elite sports: a partnership that feels like friendship and a competitive environment that feels like family.

"It kind of felt like a big family for a few weeks; we all had each other's back," Kam said about Team USA. That supportive atmosphere mirrors what they found in Colorado Springs, where elite athletes from different sports train side by side.

O'Shea credits the location itself as a training partner. "Getting to be in Colorado Springs and see the mountains every morning, have the beautiful air, it's amazing here." The altitude, the scenery, and the concentration of Olympic hopefuls create something unique.

"A ton of other people doing the elite things that you're trying to do, so you can be pushed from a lot of different directions," O'Shea explained.

The gold medal isn't slowing them down. The pair is already back on the ice preparing for the World Figure Skating Championship in Prague. They'll also join the "Stars on Ice" tour when it comes through Colorado, giving their home crowd a chance to celebrate in person.

Their entire community rallied behind them during the Olympics, and Kam wants to honor that support by carrying these memories forward. "I really hope that we can take so much from this experience because not everyone gets to experience it."

From a four-year-old learning to glide at a military academy to an Olympic champion representing her country, Kam's journey proves that big dreams planted early can grow into golden reality.
