Oman's First Private Hospital Launches Robotic Surgery
Four women in Oman just received advanced robotic surgery without leaving their country, thanks to a historic medical breakthrough. Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital became the first private healthcare facility in Oman to perform robotic-assisted procedures, bringing world-class treatment home.
Oman just took a giant leap forward in making advanced medical care accessible to everyone who lives there.
Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital in Muscat made history this month by performing the first robotic surgeries in Oman's private healthcare sector. Over two days, four women underwent complex gynecological procedures using cutting-edge technology that previously required traveling abroad for treatment.
Dr. Thuria Al Rawahi, a senior gynecological surgeon, performed all four operations using the SSI Mantra 3 robotic surgical system. The cases ranged from suspected cancer to severe endometriosis, conditions that often sent patients overseas for specialized care. All four women recovered smoothly and went home in stable condition.
The technology offers surgeons high-definition 3D visualization and precise control through an ergonomic console. Future capabilities include live streaming and remote guidance, meaning doctors across Oman could eventually consult with specialists during procedures.
The patients ranged from 47 to 61 years old. One 61-year-old woman with suspected uterine cancer had her uterus, ovaries, and lymph nodes removed. A 51-year-old with severe endometriosis underwent surgery while preserving her ovaries. Two other women had procedures for heavy bleeding and ovarian cysts.

Dr. Somashekhar, an internationally recognized robotic oncology surgeon, guided the surgeries. He noted that the SSI Mantra 3 system, developed in India, offers precision and training potential that will expand treatment options across multiple medical specialties.
The Ripple Effect
This breakthrough reflects a bigger mission. Aster DM Healthcare's "Treat in Oman" initiative aims to eliminate the need for residents to travel abroad for advanced medical care, saving families thousands in travel costs and emotional stress.
The project aligns with Oman Vision 2040, showing how public and private healthcare can work together to raise standards nationwide. Oman now joins the select group of Gulf countries offering robotic surgery beyond government hospitals.
Officials from Oman's Ministry of Health supported the project from the start. Dr. Ahmed bin Salim Al-Mandhari, Undersecretary for Planning and Health Regulation, called it proof that partnerships between public and private sectors can drive innovation and strengthen expertise across the country.
Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital plans to expand robotic surgery to other specialties soon. What started with four women in Muscat could transform how thousands of Omanis access life-changing medical care without ever leaving home.
