O'Neal School Celebrates 8th Graders After 10-Year Journey

A middle school awards ceremony became a celebration of lasting community when The O'Neal School recognized students who've spent their entire academic lives together.

The school honored eight members of its "10-Year Falcon Club" on Wednesday, students who started as wide-eyed kindergarteners and finished middle school side by side. Lily Austin, Ava Bozovich, Isla Haughey, Abigail Holroyd, Tyler Kuhn, Ella Marino, Amelia Neville, and Adalyn Pohlmeyer have spent a decade learning, growing, and supporting each other through every milestone.

The ceremony celebrated far more than test scores. Students earned recognition for achievements ranging from Science Olympiad competitions to starring in the school's production of Willy Wonka, showing how education extends beyond classroom walls.

Adalyn Pohlmeyer capped her 10-year journey by receiving the O'Neal Award, the school's highest honor for integrity, leadership, service, and academic excellence. Three other students received the prestigious award for their respective grades: Madeleine Beckman for fifth grade, Adrianne Kim for sixth, and Maddie Leland for seventh.

Teachers recognized standout students in every subject, from world languages to performing arts. Several students earned multiple honors, including Abigail Holroyd, who received both the Science Award and the Headmaster's Gallery Art Award for her creativity across disciplines.

The Ripple Effect

When schools celebrate character alongside academics, they send a powerful message about what truly matters. The ceremony included special recognition for perseverance through the J. Garner Dodd Award and the James R. Miles Award for character and leadership, showing students that how they treat others counts just as much as their grades.

The Citizenship Awards honored students who demonstrate kindness and integrity daily: Elijah Lee, Casen Dowd, Rafe Hardee, and Olivia Garcia. These aren't flashy achievements, but they're the ones that shape school culture and create communities where everyone can thrive.

For the 10-Year Falcon Club members, this ceremony marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. They've grown up together, learned together, and built friendships that started when they could barely tie their own shoes.
